About Body Awareness

Since 1993, Body Awareness Studio has been a cornerstone of the Atlanta wellness community, offering top-tier Pilates instruction and integrated wellness practices. Rooted in the pioneering methods of Joseph H. Pilates, our studio integrates the best practices of Pilates, Resistance Stretching, and Energy Medicine to promote balanced development of body, mind, and spirit.

Our Pilates classes provide a gentle yet powerful fitness program that emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and mindful movement. Utilizing equipment with multiple springs for resistance, our exercises foster proper body mechanics, resulting in improved posture, a strong core, and enhanced overall well-being. By focusing on controlled, thoughtful movement, we help our clients reduce stress and connect deeply with their bodies.

Our Approach

With Pilates’ popularity on the rise, it’s important to understand how to get the most out of your Pilates practice. Body Awareness Studio offers an individual, in-depth approach to the Pilates method. But what does that mean? Here’s what to expect to learn and experience in your Body Awareness Pilates session.

Alignment

At Body Awareness Studio, you will learn how to create and maintain the proper posture for your body, whether it be standing, seated, or lying down. Correct alignment is of utmost importance when practicing Pilates and can help prevent the negative impact that gravity can have on the body over time.

Breath

Breath is not only a principle of Pilates as a whole, it is also an essential part of the Body Awareness approach. You will learn to use breath to promote relaxation in the mind and body through balancing the nervous system and to facilitate core activation through breath.

Spring Tension

The Body Awareness approach to Pilates uses spring tension, rather than traditional weights, to create load and tension. Spring tension uses dynamic resistance to create strength and flexibility in the joints and connective tissue.

Pilates Principles

In addition to the Body Awareness approach, there are 9 core principles of Pilates. These concepts should be present in any Pilates class or session you attend, and they promote a balanced, dynamic Pilates practice. These 9 principles include:

  • Breathing
  • Concentration
  • Control
  • Centering
  • Precision
  • Balanced Muscle Development
  • Rhythm and Flow
  • Whole Body Movement
  • Relaxation
