The Body Awareness Approach

Since 1993, Body Awareness Studio has been serving Atlanta students with the industry’s most established Pilates professionals. Primarily based on the method of training and rehabilitation developed by Joseph H. Pilates, Body Awareness also combines the best of PilatesResistance Stretching and Energy Medicine to train a uniformly developed body, mind and spirit.

The Pilates classes at Body Awareness Studio offer a gentle, yet highly effective fitness program. The equipment used in the Pilates method utilizes multiple springs, rather than weights, to create resistance. The movement is slow and rhythmic, with the focus on using correct body mechanics to develop the major postural muscles. Pilates exercises strengthen the body’s core muscles, producing a flat stomach, strong lower back, and toned buttocks, inner thighs and hamstrings. Emphasis on stretching creates long, flexible muscles. Controlled, thoughtful movement reduces the effects of stress on the body and the mind.

The rewards of moving properly can be felt outside the studio, and students often experience a profound difference in how they approach daily activities. We offer Private Sessions and Group Reformer classes for all levels of experience, as well as other forms of movement classes to supplement your Pilates training.

“I’ve taken my exercise classes over the years, but I’ve never loved anything as much as pilates and my experience at Body Awareness Studio.I feel a totally different connection to my body-the way I stand and move and look. I also have enjoyed working with many different instructors who have all taught me something a little different to make me better.” -Katherine M.

Studio Guidelines

Here are some helpful guidelines to make your next visit to Body Awareness Studio a positive and enriching one:

Arriving at the Studio

Please arrive to the studio 10 – 15 minutes early to register, pay and get ready and warm up before your session. Your practice begins when you arrive at Body Awareness, so please remove your shoes & turn off your cell phone.

What to Wear and Bring

Please wear athletic clothing you can move in that is flexible and non-binding, such as shorts, T-shirts, leggings, etc. We generally practice on bare feet or toe socks.  Please bring a small hand towel to your session.

Perfumes and Colognes

Please refrain from wearing perfumes and colognes during class. Please do not wear body lotions for the maintenance of our equipment.

Food

Pilates exercises should be performed on an empty stomach. Ideally, wait two to three hours after a large meal, one to two hours after a light snack.

Health Conditions

Please consult your physician before starting any new exercise regime, especially if you have health issues. Inform the instructor of any serious health conditions such as neck, back or joint injuries, heart disease, high blood pressure, recent surgery, osteoporosis or pregnancy.

Medications

Do not practice Pilates while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (including prescribed drugs) that may alter your ability to judge your physical capabilities.

Age Requirement

Students under the age of 16 may attend class only with prior instructor approval. In our experience, we have found younger students benefit the most in a one-on-one setting for focus and individualized attention.

Owning Your Pilates Practice

Your Pilates practice is an investment of your time, energy, and money to improve your health and overall well-being.  In order to make the most of your investment and to achieve the maximum benefit from your practice at Body Awareness Studio, we suggest that you choose one or two exercises from your sessions and incorporate them into your daily life.  We have seen the students that remember to practice at home progress at a much quicker pace than those who do not.  Your instructor will give you suggestions to help you with your at-home practice.
